Public Safety Diver

Public Safety Diving (PSD) has come a long way in the last 20 years. Yet the road is still long and paved with danger. PSD comprises more than a sport diver throwing his gear on his back and jumping in the water. A Public Safety Diver cannot choose the conditions in which he/she works. Often conditions consist of black water, freezing temperatures, and/or dangerous contamination. Regardless of the good intentions of the dive team, insufficient training, ill-defined techniques and a lack of knowledge or ability can kill divers. Public Safety Divers must be sufficiently trained to handle all conditions. To successfully recover anything a team of divers must be knowledgeable and safe. (Course minimum is 6 candidates)

What You Learn…

The IANTD Public Safety Diver (PSD) course is designed as a four day program for Search and Recovery Dive Teams and Volunteers. This comprehensive course includes but is not limited to: team composition and protocols, liability issues, safety procedures, equipment and configurations, site evaluation-interviews-control, search operations, underwater investigation and recovery, post dive debriefing and recording. Our focus is hands-on in water techniques to sharpen the skills of the PSD diver. Our program is OSHA approved and NFPA compliant. Unlike other courses the maximum student to instructor ratio is 8 to 1 giving the student more individual attention. (course minimum – 6 candidates)

What You Need…

You will use basic Public Safety Diving equipment including BCD, Regulator, Full Face Mask, Extra Mask, Depth & Pressure Gauge, 2 – 80 cu. Ft. Tanks, Weight system (harness type), Fins, Drysuit, Equipment bag or box, Reel w/ 100′ of #36 line, Marker Float or 50# lift bag, Dry Suit w/ Dry Hood, Proper under garments, Dry gloves for contaminated water, Diver & Surface Communication, Redundant Air Source (13 to 20 cu. Ft. tank & Regulator or switch block), 2 – Cutting devices located on the upper body, and Proper training on all your equipment.
